What if my plans do not work

Career planning is not about creating an irreversible blueprint of your career that you need  to stick to no matter what. It is simply a guideline that helps you channelize your time and energy in the right direction. If you realize, at any point in yourcareer or even your studies, that you have probably chosen the wrong field, do not hesitate to correct yourself. The sooner you effect the change, the better, since you will end up saving on years of study and work in a field that may not excite you.

There are scores of student who choose to enter a particular stream (for example: art, commerce, etc.) after school and realize in a few months that they do not enjoy it. Change your stream as soon as you can, since it is easier to catch up while you are still a student rather than after you start working in a profession that you do not relate to

Ultimately, career planning is all about identifying your core competencies and reaching your goals in a methodical way. It is about optimal utilization of your resources. It is not a rigid plan of action; it is simply a constructive means of directing your own life.

You need to be aware of your own strengths and weaknesses as well as areas of interest so that you know which profession you would enjoy working in. Apart  from that, take into account the opportunities and constraints that apply to you-such as finance, geographical location and mobility.

After these factors are accounted for, scout for careers that you think you might fit into. With the advent of the internet as well as other sources such as books and counseling centers, there is no dearth of information on careers and the courses that lead to them, Seek information about colleges and their admission procedures so that you can prepare well in time and do not lose out on opportunities.

If possible, talk to people who are already following the career(s) that you are interested in and let them help you decide if that is indeed the right choice for you. You may want to know more about the working conditions, remuneration and travel requirements that a career entails. These are important factors that will define your lifestyle later.

So, as you read  on, try and analyze yourself and your circumstances so that you can make the best possible career plan.
