Career Planning


Ford couldn’t have said it better. He underlines the importance of choosing a career well, with these words. Our career is not merely a way of earning our livelihood; it is an integral part of our personality and our identity.

Traditionally, students opted for ‘popular’ career based on the preferences of their parents, the ‘safely and security’ quotient, or simply the money factor. A career was considered simply to be a source of bread and butter. However, new age thinking dictates otherwise

With a plethora of options available to suit each one’s tastes, aptitude and attitude, There is a huge platter of careers available for everyone. Career planning therefore, is all more important for one to make the right choice.

Why should you plan your career?

The career that you choose becomes a very important part of your identity. In fact, most of the people that you interact within your lifetime associate you with your career. As a result, you need to be really interested in and comfortable with the choice you make, because you need to live with it.

If you do not carefully plan your career, you may still end up being monetarily successful; however, satisfaction would elude you. Financial rewards cannot replace the enjoyment and gratification that you would derive from your pursuits. If you do not choose the right career, you may end up changing stream mid way through your life, wasting years of time and effort.


When should you plan your career?

Teenage is actually a very tender age to expect absolute clarity about your future. However, this is when you are required to make important choices in terms of academic pursuits that would eventually lead to your career. Therefore, try and be as clear as you can so that you choose your stream well

If your can identify the broad area of work (for example: medicine management, mass communication, etc) by the time you are at the 10+2 stage, you will be in a better position to choose your graduation course. You can then choose your area of specialization later, even after a few years of work experience.

Start planning your career in broad terms by the time you are n Class 9 at school, so that by the time you finish your class 10 examinations , you know which colleges you can apply to. Latter, by the time you are in Class 12, you will have gained more clarity in terms of choosing your graduation course.

What if my plans do not work

Career planning is not about creating an irreversible blueprint of your career that you need  to stick to no matter what. It is simply a guideline that helps you channelize your time and energy in the right direction. If you realize, at any point in yourcareer or even your studies, that you have probably chosen the wrong field, do not hesitate to correct yourself. The sooner you effect the change, the better, since you will end up saving on years of study and work in a field that may not excite you.

There are scores of student who choose to enter a particular stream (for example: art, commerce, etc.) after school and realize in a few months that they do not enjoy it. Change your stream as soon as you can, since it is easier to catch up while you are still a student rather than after you start working in a profession that you do not relate to

Ultimately, career planning is all about identifying your core competencies and reaching your goals in a methodical way. It is about optimal utilization of your resources. It is not a rigid plan of action; it is simply a constructive means of directing your own life.


How do I plan my career?

Information is the key in the initial stage. This includes information about yourself as well as about the opportunities available. You need to be aware of your own strengths and weaknesses as well as areas of interest so that you know which profession you would enjoy working in. Apart  from that, take into account the opportunities and constraints that apply to you-such as finance, geographical location and mobility.

After these factors are accounted for, scout for careers that you think you might fit into. With the advent of the internet as well as other sources such as books and counseling centers, there is no dearth of information on careers and the courses that lead to them, Seek information about colleges and their admission procedures so that you can prepare well in time and do not lose out on opportunities.

If possible, talk to people who are already following the career(s) that you are interested in and let them help you decide if that is indeed the right choice for you. You may want to know more about the working conditions, remuneration and travel requirements that a career entails. These are important factors that will define your lifestyle later.
